Normal installation can easily be done in approximately 5 minutes with two people. It is a large cargo box, and not recommended to hoist up there on your own. In all, even though we disassembled one of our clamp mechanisms for the sake of testing, we were able to install the Yakima Skybox Lo securely with two people in about 20 minutes. However, it takes a lot of turns to make that happen, and it’s improbable to run into the issue. One problem we did run into is that too many turns of the adjustment knob can dislocate the screw from the clamp mechanism, and because the receiving thread is pivoted, re-attachment proves extremely difficult. On top of that, the quick release mounting mechanism on this cargo box is designed to fit most crossbars, and there’s little worry about whether installation will be possible on your automobile.ĭuring installation, we recommend double checking the added warnings in the provided instructions. Out of the box the Yakima Skybox Lo is fully assembled and ready for a tool free installation. Key Features: A consumer should not have to spend more money on a guaranteed product. These things happen all too often! It’s time to hit the road and seek adventure, and whether it’s your crew of weekend warriors or a backseat crammed full of rugrats, space has become a factor. I will never recommend Yakima Skybox to anyone again! This company cannot be trusted to stand behind their product guarantee. Instead of warranting the product with repair or replacement they want to just give me money back. They essentially want me to buy another box and spend more money on a product that catastrophically failed. Instead of replacing the box, Yakima simply wants to refund me the purchase price through the mail because the cost of a current box is $200 over what I paid. Topping things off, I'm in the middle of an epic trip when the box failed. I discovered this when I stopped for gas. I too lost a chair on the road somewhere because the box opened. The plastic hinges warped over time and made the box frustrating to close securely. The other side is still difficult to use because the hinges It broke which similar to you means I can only use one side. The metal latch attaches to a plastic peg. The internal mechanism on the latch broke in the closed position. "a little pain" is an understatement! I have a 16S from Yakima. It's a great way to free up room in the car. I'd buy the exact same model in a second. It's easy to put on or take off the car in 5 minutes. I've also overloaded it pretty heavy at times, so it's done really well as I don't treat it gently. I probably did it wrenching the cover around hard in subzero weather, but after doing the minor fix, it's been fine for years. I did get two tiny cracks are the rear hinge rivets where it meets the cover, so I got a 1/8 drill bit and drilled at the ends of the tiny cracks to prevent spreading. I've driven all the way across Nevada and Oregon multiple times at 70-80 mph for hours with it fully loaded and no issues. I've had it in high winds, hurricane force rains on 2,000 mile drives, and ice storms, and everything stayed nice and dry. I lay a packing blanket in the bottom and load it up. Fits perfect, hauls 3 full sized rolling TSA sized suitcases, 1 smaller one, and a couple pairs of boots. I have the Skybox 16 on my Gen 5 Outback (2017).
